About this deal

Croft, the suitor, had taken up with her and had an affair for some months before ending it, although the girl was in love with him. While the 2015 BBC production makes use of its budget and cast it becomes difficult as a teaching tool due to the constant flashbacks which remove the claustrophobia of the original production. But by the time the inspector is finished with his questions, the family is in turmoil and their bonds shredded.

Perhaps the best performance -- because it's just plan outrageous -- is that of Nigel Davenport as the cigar-smoking elderly father who dominates the family. Martin Nadim's Inspector lacks eye contact, gravitas and authority, appearing more as Columbo than voice or moral reason. The second production earned multiple awards, including Best Revival of a play, and best featured actress for Jane Adams. Then the doorbell of the mansion rings and the maids usher in a police inspector named Goole, who has come to make some inquiries about the rather nasty suicide of a poor young lady a a few hours ago. An absolutely gripping atmospheric huis-clos, this psychological period drama could remind of an English Zola novelette and it will make you take a good hard look at yourself.Set in 1912, an Upper class English family are celebrating their daughter's engagement when their evening is interrupted by a police inspector. It seems like some actors are learning their lines just before the camera starts rolling while John Farries seems particularly poorly cast and out of his depth with the character of Mr Birling. Some credit should be given to Jason Farries who portrays well the upper-class entitled Gerald Croft. Penelope Wildgoos' portrayal of Mrs Birling leans into the cold upper-class matriarch to a good degree and creates a distant unapproachable character but sadly this contrasts poorly with J Farries portrayal to the point that Mr and Mrs Birling appear as little more than acquaintances.

Berling, his starchy wife Sybil, his pretty daughter Shiela, his quietly drunk young son Eric, and the ambitious suitor for Shiela's hand, Gerald Croft. Each person, without knowing it, and without knowing of the involvement of the others, had contributed to the girl's horrible death. The setting, props, lighting, camera work, costumes and makeup are massively let down by poor performances and wild liberties with the lines, to the point that much of Priestley's well crafted ironies are lost.

Leona Clarke's flirtatious Sheila would be fit for a character in 2014 but not 1914 and detracts from the play's didacticism. Berling, head of a community organization for poverty stricken ladies in trouble, had turned her away. Here was an opportunity to become a classroom staple praised by teachers for accuracy sadly lost to poor casting and performances which struggled under the weight of sophisticated characters. The weak son Eric had picked her up when she was down and impregnated her before stealing some money and sending her on her way.

A mysterious inspector investigates the wealthy Birling family and their dinner guest following the suicide of a young woman. Inspector Goole leaves, warning them that if people don't take care of each other, there will be fire, blood, and anguish -- an anticipation of the war that was to break out two years later. Ensues a flawless story, stunning cinematography, perfect period atmosphere, and absolutely top drawer acting. One by one, the guests are questioned and it's revealed that each of them had in some serial way contributed to the girl's death.

Except for daughter Shiela and guilty son Eric, who accept their responsibilities in the chain of events that led to the death of an attractive and highly principled young lady of no particular means.
